TTARA Research Foundation Symposium on the Texas Property Tax - May 20, 2008 - 9:00a.m. - 4:30p.m. - Capitol Extension Auditorium State Capitol Building 100 East 11th Street Austin, TX 78701

There are more bills dealing with property taxes filed every legislative session than on any other tax. Poll after poll reveals dissatisfaction with one aspect of the property tax system or the other. Despite these facts, few people really know how the property tax works or why.

This Symposium is designed to give policymakers and their staffs a short course on the history and role of the property tax in Texas, why local governments use it, how it actually works, who pays it, and what its economic impact is. In addition to explaining the "nuts and bolts" of the property tax, speakers will discuss features of other state property tax systems that are often cited in proposals to change the Texas system. The symposium's ultimate objective is to enable policymakers to better evaluate alternatives proposed for modifying or even replacing the property tax in a meaningful context.

The symposium features experts on all aspects of ad valorem taxation from the TTARA Research Foundation, counterpart organizations in other states, and nationally recognized academic analysts. Materials from each of the sessions of the symposium will be published and will provide a wealth of data and information that policymakers can refer to and use in preparation for the 2009 legislative session
